Guide
How to set up finance tracking, what to record, how to remove the demo data, how the Vault keeps your passwords safe, how to install Lukedonia on your phone and how to record by chatting with the Telegram bot.
1. One-time setup
Do this once, in this order. It takes about 15 minutes.
-
1
Payday and budget split
Set the day your salary arrives. Every summary, budget and warning runs from payday to the day before the next payday. Keep 50/30/20 (needs/wants/savings) unless you have a reason to change it.
Settings → Finance -
2
Add every account with today’s balance
One account per place you keep money. Use the balance your bank or e-wallet app shows today as the opening balance, and give each account a purpose:
Finance → AccountsExample Purpose Why SeaBank Savings Money you don’t touch; counts toward savings goals Bank Jago Emergency Fund 3–6× monthly spending, only for emergencies myBCA, GoPay, cash Daily Spending Where salary lands and daily spending comes from -
3
Check the categories
18 categories are ready. Rename or add your own, and make sure each expense category sits in the right group: Needs (food, bills, transport), Wants (snacks, entertainment, shopping) or Savings (investments).
Finance → Categories -
4
Recurring bills and salary
Add salary, electricity, internet and subscriptions with the day they are due. Lukedonia reminds you when one is not recorded yet, and the Record button fills in the transaction for you. Started mid-period? Set a Tracking start date in Finance Settings so bills due before it are not flagged.
Finance → Budget → Recurring -
5
Spending budget
Set one budget for everything you spend day to day, payday to payday: food, snacks, fuel, a haircut, whatever the category or account. Recurring bills and investments are planned separately and don’t count. Lukedonia then tells you how much you can still spend per day. After one full period, use Set Budget → Fill from the 3-period average and go a bit lower if you want to save more.
Finance → Budget -
6
Savings goals
Start with an emergency fund of 3× your monthly spending, linked to your Emergency Fund account. Then add goals like a trip or a laptop, with a target date if you have one. Lukedonia estimates when you will reach each goal from how much you actually save.
Finance → Savings Goals
2. What to record, and as what
The one rule: money moving between your own accounts is a Transfer, not an expense. Only money that leaves you is an expense.
| Situation | Type | Category / account |
|---|---|---|
| Iced coffee paid with GoPay | Expense | Snacks & Coffee · GoPay |
| Lunch paid in cash | Expense | Food & Drinks · Wallet |
| Salary arrives | Income | Salary · myBCA (or Record on the recurring item) |
| Move money myBCA → SeaBank | Transfer | From myBCA to SeaBank |
| Top up GoPay from myBCA | Transfer | From myBCA to GoPay (the admin fee, if any, is a separate expense) |
| A friend pays you back for something you covered | Refund | Refund for the category of the original expense · the account it arrived in (paid cash, repaid by bank transfer? a Transfer Wallet → bank works too) |
| A store or the office refunds a purchase | Refund | Same category as the purchase, so it lowers that spending instead of counting as income |
| Withdraw cash at an ATM | Transfer | From myBCA to Wallet |
| Buy mutual funds in an app you don’t track | Expense | Investments (counts as Savings in 50/30/20) |
| Netflix or a yearly game pass is charged | Expense | Record on it in Finance → Subscriptions (yearly plans only ask in their renewal month) |
| Balance in the app differs from the bank | Adjust | Accounts → Adjust, enter the real balance |
Every transaction needs: amount, category (not for transfers; for a refund, the expense category it pays back), account, date. A short note (“Kopi Kenangan”, “Grab to office”) makes searching easier later.
Tip: record right after paying, it takes 10 seconds with Record Transaction on the Dashboard.
Every day
- Record every expense and income.
- Glance at the bell: red means stop spending in that category.
Every week
- Compare balances with your bank apps and use Adjust if they differ.
- Check the budget: a yellow bar means slow down.
Every payday
- Record the salary.
- Pay yourself first: transfer 20% to savings right away.
- Review last period on the Budget page and adjust the budget if needed.
4. Reading the warnings
On track · under 80% and at a normal pace.
Almost used up · 80% or more of the budget.
Too fast · spending faster than the days passing; you will overshoot.
Over budget · hold off on anything that can wait until payday.
Other insights tell you when payday came but nothing was saved, when last period’s savings missed the 20% target, when a category is unusually high compared with earlier periods, when the emergency fund covers less than 3 months, and when a recurring bill is not recorded yet.
5. Removing the demo data
Before you start with real data, clear the example accounts and transactions. Run this in a terminal in the project folder, with your own email:
This removes ALL accounts, transactions, budgets, savings goals and recurring items of that user
Demo and real finance data are mixed, so everything goes. Notes and bookmarks you created yourself are kept (only the demo ones are removed), and so are your categories. Run it once, before you enter real data.
Want the examples back to explore? Run:
Then continue with 1. Setup.
6. Vault: passwords and documents
Keep website logins, game accounts, app passwords and important documents in one place, protected by a master password that only you know.
-
1
How it is protected
Every entry and file is encrypted in your browser (AES-256) with a key made from your master password before it is saved. The database only stores scrambled data: not even the Supabase admin can read it. Your master password is never sent anywhere.
-
2
Choose a master password and save the recovery key
Open Passwords the first time to create the vault. Use a long password you don’t use anywhere else, for example 4–5 random words. You then get a recovery key: download or print it and keep it offline (a drawer at home, a safe, not a photo on your phone).
Vault → Passwords -
3
Daily use
Search with /, then copy the username or password with one click; the clipboard is cleared after 30 seconds. The vault locks itself after a few idle minutes (choose how many in Settings → Vault), when you reload or close the tab, and when you sign out. Entries marked Reused share a password with another entry: change one of them.
Settings → Vault -
4
Documents for you and your family
Upload scans or photos (KTP, KK, passport, SIM, STNK, diplomas, insurance policies...) up to 50 MB each; drag them onto the page or use Upload. Files are encrypted with the same vault key before they leave the browser, and only decrypted again to preview or download. Set Belongs to (Me, Father, Mother...) to group them per person, and fill in the expiry date so documents that need renewing show up at the top.
Vault → Documents
Forget the master password AND lose the recovery key = the vault is gone
That is the price of real encryption: there is no reset by the admin and no back door. With the recovery key you can set a new master password on the unlock screen (Forgot your master password?). If you think someone saw your recovery key, create a new one in Settings → Vault.
7. Install on your phone
Add Lukedonia to your home screen and it opens full screen like a normal app, with its own icon. No app store needed, and it updates by itself.
-
1
Android (Chrome)
Open Lukedonia, tap the ⋮ menu and choose Add to Home screen or Install app. Chrome may also offer the install by itself.
-
2
iPhone (Safari)
Open Lukedonia in Safari, tap Share and choose Add to Home Screen.
-
3
Stay signed in on the phone
A phone pauses Lukedonia as soon as you switch to another app, which looks like closing the browser. With Sign out when the browser is closed on, you would have to sign in almost every time. Turn it off on the phone (it only applies to that device); Finance Lock and Vault still lock themselves.
Settings → Profile
Your data lives in the database, so the app needs internet. Without a connection it shows a You're offline page with a Try again button.
8. Telegram bot
The quickest way to record on the go: send the bot a line like
kopi 25k and it is saved, with the category and account picked for you. Setting it up takes
a few minutes, once.
-
1
Create your bot in Telegram
- In Telegram, open
@BotFather(the official one, with a blue check) and send/newbot. - Give it a name, e.g.
Lukedonia, then a username that ends in bot, e.g.lukedonia_lerry_bot. - BotFather replies with a token (numbers, a colon, letters). Copy it and keep it secret: it controls the bot.
-
5
See it right away (optional)
An open Lukedonia updates by itself when the bot records something: no refresh needed, and a small Recorded via Telegram message appears. For a phone notification as well, also when Lukedonia is closed, open Settings → Finance → Telegram Bot on the phone (in the installed app) and tap Turn on under Notifications on this device, then allow notifications. Send a test checks it.
- In Telegram, open
-
2
Give the token to Lukedonia on Vercel
- Open vercel.com → project lukedonia → Settings → Environment Variables.
- Key
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN, value: the token. Environment: Production. Save. - Go to Deployments, open the ⋮ menu of the latest one and choose Redeploy, so the new setting is used.
-
3
Connect your chat
- In Lukedonia open Settings → Finance → Telegram Bot and tap Connect Telegram.
- Tap Open Telegram and tap Start, then Start in the chat. The bot says it is connected, and the Settings card shows it too.
-
4
Record by chatting
kopi 25kExpense, category guessed (Jajan & Kopi), paid from that category's default account makan siang 35rb bcaName an account anywhere in the line to use it bensin 50k kemarinDated yesterday gaji 8jt·+150k jual bukuIncome: an income category, or a + in front of the amount tf 500k bca seabankTransfer from the first account to the second Amounts can be written as 25k, 25rb, 25.000 or 1,5jt. The bot answers with what it saved and how much of your spending budget is left. When it can't guess the category it shows buttons to pick one; next time the same note gets the same category. Every answer has an Undo button.
Commands:

9. Fingerprint & locks
Finance, Docs and the Vault can stay locked until you touch the fingerprint sensor (or use face unlock, Windows Hello). Typing your password always works too.
-
1
Choose what to lock
Settings → Profile → Locks & Fingerprint: switch on Lock the Finance pages and/or Lock the Docs pages. One unlock opens both for that tab; they lock again after 15 minutes without activity or when you close the tab. The Vault always locks by itself (Settings → Vault).
-
2
Add your fingerprint
In the same card tap Add this device and touch the sensor. The phone saves a passkey for Lukedonia (in Google Password Manager on Android). Add every device you use, e.g. the phone and the laptop.
-
3
Let it open the Vault (optional)
Right after adding, or later with Use for Vault, enter your master password once and touch the sensor again. From then on the Vault unlock screen shows Unlock with fingerprint. This needs a browser that supports the passkey PRF extension (recent Chrome on Android with Google Password Manager); if it does not, Lukedonia tells you and the master password keeps working as before.
-
4
Unlock
On a locked page tap Unlock with fingerprint, or type your password. Lost the phone? Remove its fingerprint under Settings → Profile from another device.
Your fingerprint never leaves the phone: Lukedonia only learns that it matched. Anyone whose fingerprint is registered on your phone can unlock there, so only add devices that are yours.
